Late Night with the Devil – release 22 March 2024

A TV talk show host has a plan to save his show from being cancelled. Balancing off horror against the mundane this is not a hugely horror filled movie but it does provide some scares and gore. The low budget movie delivers a satisfying blend of horror, nostalgia, and authenticity. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most terrifying stories can unfold in the most unexpected settings.

Exploring Horror and Nostalgia

Horror films have a unique ability to blend unexpected settings with terrifying narratives, and “Late Night with the Devil” exemplifies this fusion brilliantly. Released on the horror streaming platform Shudder, this film takes viewers on a chilling journey within the seemingly innocuous world of a ’70s talk show.

The premise centers around Jack Delroy, played by the talented David Dastmalchian, a talk show host struggling to save his program from cancellation. In a daring move, Delroy plans an occult-themed Halloween episode during sweeps season, hoping to boost ratings and revive his show’s popularity.

What sets “Late Night with the Devil” apart is its dedication to its concept. The entire film unfolds as faux found footage of Delroy’s Halloween episode, complete with a live studio audience and commercial breaks. The setting, a convincingly rendered ’70s talk show set, playing off against the cheery TV format with creeping dread, sustaining tension throughout the brief 93 minutes.

The Cairnes brothers, known for their work in the horror genre, recreate the aesthetics of ’70s late-night TV, immersing viewers in a bygone era of collective viewership. Drawing inspiration from real-life incidents like Christine Chubbuck’s live suicide and the BBC’s infamous Ghostwatch, adding layers of authenticity to the narrative.

David Dastmalchian’s (The Dark Knight, Dune: part two) portrayal of Jack Delroy is a standout performance. His journey into the character, initially fueled by doubts, reflects the essence of horror—confronting fears and embracing the unknown. Dastmalchian’s inspiration from talk show host Don Lane adds depth to Delroy’s personality, making his portrayal both captivating and authentic.

One of the film’s highlights is its ability to blend horror with nostalgia. Elements of the satanic panic era, dark magic, and nods to classics like “The Exorcist” create a chilling yet familiar atmosphere. The occasional fourth-wall breaks and behind-the-scenes shots add layers of tension and intrigue, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats.

Receiving praise from horror maestro Stephen King further cements “Late Night with the Devil” as a must-watch for horror enthusiasts. It’s a testament to the film’s dedication to its unique premise and the talent of its cast and crew.
